The Sofitel Old Winter Palace in Luxor was built in 1886 to attract the nobility of Europe, and it is where, from a posting on their bulletin board, guests were first informed of Howard Carter's great discovery of Tut's treasures. The great Egyptologists was staying at the hotel upon his world awakening discovery, and even though he had a residence built on the West Bank, he continued frequenting the hotel up almost until his death. He was often seen sitting in self imposed isolation in the hotel's gardens. This renowned hotel is stylish and spacious and possibly one of the most prestigious in Luxor, offering an oasis of European flavor and Victorian charm. Built at the end of the Nineteenth Century it boasts elegant wide corridors, tall windows, beautiful antiques and luxurious furnishings, combining the elegance of the past with all the comforts of today. The Temple of Luxor is approx 100m away, Mummification Museum and Luxor Market approx 1km, Luxor Museum approx 2km, Banana Island Botanical Gardens approx 3km away, Karnak Temple approx 7km, with the Valley of the Kings & Queens, Hatchepsut Temple and Medinat Habu Temple all approx 30km away. Luxor Airport is approx 15km from the hotel, with an estimated driving time of 20 minutes.

The "Royal" bar is an elegant English style bar serving traditional afternoon tea, with cocktails and other refreshments with classical piano music every evening.
